Seeing that Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash is one of our Top 5 TIFF movies to look out for, we couldn’t be more excited to see the film’s official trailer (out today).
Having already won both the audience and U.S. grand jury awards at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, we can see why this movie is already getting a lot of buzz.
The film follows aspiring jazz drummer Neyman’s (Miles Teller from The Spectacular Now and the upcoming Fantastic 4) quest for greatness as he is mentored by a music maestro at one of the best music schools in the country (J.K. Simmons).
However, don’t expect the young jazz drummer’s musical journey to be a smooth rise to the top. As seen in the trailer, Simmons’ character turns from encouraging to merciless with a blink of an eye and it quickly drives his student to get a little angry.
Of course, if Teller’s hard drumming and instrument destroying isn’t intense enough for you, then perhaps you should watch this scene of Simmons slapping and screaming at his student. Who knew learning music could be so cruel?!
Whiplash will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival this year and hit theatres October 10.
